Fat-Shaming Can Make You Fatter

Recently, NPR published a review of a study conducted with over 6,000 American men and women aged 50 and older, surveying how often they experienced different types of discrimination. This study also measured participants' height and weight. After four years a follow-up study was conducted that showed that overweight people who had said they experienced discrimination based on weight were more than two times more likely to be obese four years later than people who did not face weight-based discrimination. Those that were obese at the outset of the study were more than three times more likely to remain so if they were discriminated based on weight, while other types of discrimination (non weight-based) showed no effect on weight.

The Big Question

The big question here is: why so much hate towards fat people? As both a former fat kid (I weighed nearly 220 pounds at only 5'5" when I was 15 years old) and as a current fitness-industry professional who works with clients with weight issues, I am not surprised by these statistics.

As a young kid, I was bullied and discriminated against because of my weight. But while I definitely learned to grow a thick skin after years of being teased, tormented, picked on and rejected by girls, this discrimination triggered a guru-like quest in me to get fit and live a healthy lifestyle. Deep down, it probably drove me to get my Masters degree in Exercise Science and start working with people like me and helping them get fit, while simultaneously educating the skinny population that sometimes you can't help being a little larger!

Weight is determined by a lot of things, including genetics, which you can't control. Unfortunately, the public at large (and society in general) tend to generalize all large or heavy people as lazy or other more discriminatory stereotypes.

The Effects of the Hatred

Unfortunately, not every person that is on the large side has the same thick skin that I grew. This kind of "fat hating" can lead to emotional eating, bouts of depression or deeper depression, can cause or worsen eating disorders, and generally discourages people from becoming healthy. I see it every day in my gym...the stares, the backhanded comments, the giggles. And it breaks my heart, because all too often I see gym members who are weight conscious get discriminated against. Our culture promulgates this problem...so much so that airlines now charge an extra ticket fee or deny service because of weight. If we intend to fix obesity in this country, we also need to fix the social and cultural stigma that goes with it.

Do Not Be Discouraged

If you are a little fluffy, and conscious of it, you DO NOT have to be discouraged by all the fat-shamers. There are plenty of people (and places) within the fitness and wellness industry that can help you reach your health and fitness goals in a safe, constructive and positive environment. I would suggest researching personal trainers in your area, as well as finding other fitness classes and locations that offer group and individualized training sessions. Like any other disease, if you are struggling with weight issues, get the help of a qualified professional.

Want to Reduce Your Appetite? This May Be the Key...

Keeping your appetite under control is a key component of weight loss and maintaining a healthy weight over your lifetime. We all have different strategies to help us manage our appetites in order to prevent overeating or making poor decisions about the foods we choose. Managing stress, getting adequate sleep and having a good exercise regimen are all methods we employ to help us keep our appetites regulated. However, recent research has revealed that the type of exercise can make more of a difference than you think.

A recent study out of the University of Western Australia found that high-intensity exercises may suppress appetite briefly afterward. The team conducting the research discovered that overweight, sedentary men (having a body mass index, or BMI, of 25-29.9) consumed almost two-hundred fewer calories after performing a vigorous exercise routine than after a period of rest.

Previous research that looked at high-intensity exercise and its effects on the body suggest that it correlates with appetite control and alterations in specific hormones that manage your feelings of hunger and your level of fullness. However, this new research that just came out discovered that those hormones are affected in different ways based on the type of workout regimen--continuous versus intermittent, and different intensity levels (moderate-, high- and very-high-intensity exercises).

The Study

The participants of the study went through four 30-minute workouts. One session was a period of rest, to serve as the control. In the other three exercise sessions, the participants worked out on a stationary bike at various levels of intensity. During one session, the men cycled continuously at a moderate level of intensity. The other two sessions involved intermittent exercise at either high-intensity or very-high-intensity where they would alternate between quick bursts of high-speed pedaling followed by longer bouts of cycling at a slower speed.

After exercising (or resting), the men consumed a 267-calorie liquid meal and were also asked to eat oatmeal until they became full. The results: the participants consumed fewer calories following the intermittent high-intensity and intermittent very-high-intensity exercise sessions versus the period of rest. Here is the calorie breakdown of what the men consumed after each session:

After a period of rest: 764 calories consumed
After continuous moderate-intensity exercise: 710 calories consumed
After intermittent high-intensity-exercise: 621 calories consumed
After intermittent very-high-intensity exercise: 594 calories consumed

And the most interesting finding? The men said they ate less the day after they performed the very-high-intensity exercise when compared to the days after their other workout sessions. This suggests that the appetite suppression experienced after the very-high-intensity workouts extends well beyond the hours immediately following the exercise and that it may even reduce your appetite the following day too.

Five big health threats for men

Young men fat, drunk, dying early

Obesity is a major problem among young men, but  Changing your diet can make all the difference.

MEN can be a touch blase about taking care of themselves but follow this guide on how to beat some of the biggest threats to men's health.

HEART DISEASE
Give artery-clogging trans-fats the flick. Watch out for processed foods made with hydrogenated oils, some margarines and take-away food cooked in vegetable oil.
Enjoy foods rich in heart healthy fats like oily fish, cold pressed olive oil, avocado, chia seeds, and nuts and their oils.
Lower your sodium intake by eating less processed and packaged foods and more natural produce.

Include more fibre in your diet by eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes, whole oats, quinoa, brown rice and grainy breads.

Don’t forget your green leafy veggies. They’re rich in B vitamins that help lower homocysteine levels, which is a marker for heart disease.
Treat yourself to some good quality antioxidant-rich dark chocolate and a couple of glasses of red wine during the week.

PROSTRATE CANCER
Eat plenty of zinc rich foods like legumes, fish, meat, eggs, wholegrains, sunflower and pumpkin seeds.
Eat omega-3 rich oily fish a few times a week.
Eat more tomato and watermelon as they are rich sources of the powerful antioxidant lycopene.
Include cruciferous veggies with meals eg. broccoli, cauliflower, kale, brussel sprouts and cabbage, as they contain cancer-fighting phytochemicals.
Enjoy curries made with antioxidant rich turmeric.
Add spirulina to your next smoothie or juice.

TYPE-2 DIABETES
Limit sugary breakfast cereals, soft drinks, and other sweet foods that will send your blood sugar levels soaring.
Swap processed ‘white’ carbohydrate foods for wholegrain alternatives like grainy breads, whole oats, wholemeal pasta and brown or wild rice.
Instead of fruit juice have a veggie juice and eat your fruit whole.

Don’t skip meals. A nice healthy breakfast is especially important.
Having protein with each meal will help keep your blood sugar levels balanced. Eg. legumes, fish, chicken, eggs, meat, nuts, quinoa and yoghurt.

DEPRESSION
Make sure you are getting enough omega-3 essential fatty acids in your diet. Your best sources are oily fish, chia and flaxseeds and walnuts.
Get a daily dose of sunshine to boost your vitamin D levels.

Eat more foods that contain tryptophan such as turkey, chicken, fish, eggs, milk, bananas and brown rice, which will help increase serotonin levels.
Supporting the growth of your ‘good’ intestinal bacteria through eating fermented foods like yoghurt, miso and kefir will help enhance serotonin production.

OBESITY
Clear your cupboards of sugary and unhealthy snack foods and stock up on healthy options like fruit, low-fat yoghurt, hummus, nutritious smoothies, and trail mixes.
Eat the way Mother Nature intended, more fresh and unprocessed foods and less packaged and refined.

Limit fatty foods that promote weight gain like full-fat dairy foods, greasy take-away foods, and creamy sauces.
Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. Fill your plate with different coloured vegies and salad each day.

Use healthy cooking techniques like steaming, baking and light stir-frying with a little olive or coconut oil.
Drink at least 2 litres of water daily, and cut back on alcohol and soft drink.
Get moving. Exercise more each day and sit less. Leave the car at home more often and walk.

Weight Loss Advice you've Never Heard

Are you done with all the usual weight loss advice such as having eating vegetables, managing portion size and working out more? Do you feel these are too generic to consider trying? May be some new fresh ideas can help to bring the enthusiasm back for getting the lean figure you always wanted. By modifying the way you eat, adding some new food items, and learning new strategies for monitoring your progress and staying on track. Swedish researchers have found that having barley for breakfast helps to manage your blood sugar.

This is because barley, and also rye kernels have a low glycemic index, which means they do not bring blood sugar up as fast as some other carbohydrate foods. You do not need to endure the drop and rise of blood sugar that exhausts you. You need to be particular about not having processed barley for best health benefits. So, get minimally processed hull barley, and avoid its processed forms such as pearl barley.

A common mistake dieters make is to not include any fulfilling ingredient in their lunch salad. It may bring down the caloric intake but leaves them feeling hungry at mid afternoon. So temper your salad with proteins and healthy fats. Add a handful of paneer and you would have served two purposes. One, it would give you adequate amount of protein along with calcium, and two, you would not feel like eating till evening. If you find slicing, dicing and preparing fruits and vegetables too much trouble, get the frozen variety and stock up your refrigerator with them. Although, it is far more nutritious and healthy to have fresh vegetables, having frozen foods would at least be better than reaching for those salty fried wafers.

You might want to cook them to keep ready at hand whenever the craving comes. Mix them in soups, add to salads or just chomp them plain! You might have heard the advice of managing your portions by having smaller plates for your food. So, what have you done with the larger ones? Do not dispose them, but use them for salads. You can have as much salad as you like, without worrying about portion size. Yes, its banaba, much different from banana. It is a great drink to lower your blood sugar. High blood sugar is linked to weight gain and even causes diabetes in some cases. If you have a pair of pants that fits tight, but still wearable, try it out every Friday morning.

A weekend morning is the real test of your weight loss resolution. If they fit as tight as last time, you will want to stick to your plan so that they fit better the next weekend. If you find them a bit loose, you are doing well.

Vegetables that Help in Weight Loss

There are some vegetables high in nutrients but low in calories. These must form a part of your weight loss diet. You do not always have to look for greens. Veggies of other colours can also help in reducing your weight. They may also have different essential nutrients to offer. Now, how to choose between the various vegetables available? [Read: Fat Burning Foods ] Although all vegetables are lower in calories than processed foods and most cooked foods, the same is not true about their carbohydrate content.

There are vegetables that are high in carbohydrates which you need to avoid such as all varieties of potato, beets, corn, peas and winter squashes. Other than vegetables that are low in carbohydrates, you also need those that are high in fibre. Although all vegetables contain this but there are some vegetables that have more of it than others. [Read: Common Weight Loss Mistakes ] You can choose an ideal combination between these foods but never gnore to satisfy your cravings as only that can prevent you from dropping the motivation. Keep a calorie count and accordingly plan to include your favorite foods in it from time to time.

You can also perhaps learn about the foods that do not seriously damage your chances of a weight loss and appeal to your taste bud at the same time. Unless you do this, you are likely to do what most people do. Fall off the track. [Read: Cooking to Lose Weight ] Some vegetables that you can include for your palette are beans, white potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams and the like to go with healthy high-carb foods such as multi-grain cereals, brown rice, lentils, whole grain wheat and whole grain pasta. It would be a good idea to have these vegetables in tempting yet healthy combinations. You can prepare:

Sleeping and Eating Late leads to Weight

Sleeping and eating late can prevent you from getting rid of fat, according to a new study conducted at the Northwestern University. The study took into consideration the connection between sleep, eating patterns and weight loss. The researcher examined the effect of sleep timings and diet on body mass index (BMI). Results showed that late night snacking and sleeping led to weight gain. Participants of the study included 25 women and 27 men. For the study, they were divided into two groups - normal and late sleepers.

56 percent of the participants in the study were normal sleepers. Their sleep cycle started shortly after midnight until 8 am. People in the group of normal sleepers reached midnight sleep before 5:30 am. 44 percent of the participants were in the group of late sleepers. They slept after midnight and woke during mid to late morning. The researcher kept a food log for every participant and a wrist sensor was used to monitor the sleeping and waking activities. This information was later analysed. Results revealed that, "normal sleepers" and "late sleepers" had different eating schedules throughout the day. Normal sleepers finished eating for the day by 8:30 pm while the late sleepers had their last meal at 10 pm. Study revealed that late sleepers suffered in terms of both the quality and quantity of their daily sleep as well as diet. Read more articles on Weight Gain

Weight Loss Tips for Men and Ladies in their 20s

Men in their twenties are usually found desperately trying to squeeze in exercise workouts and avoiding their favorite high calorie treats. So, while eating healthier foods and slipping in exercise regime does take some work and effort, you really do not have to make so much of a heroic effort for weight loss. Simply making a few simple lifestyle changes can pack a big weight loss punch over a comparatively short span of time. Following are some top tips on how to lose weight without sweating it too much:

Do not pay so much heed to diet denial. Try adding a wide variety of foods to your diet instead of subtracting them. One may add some healthy goodies that are really loved and craved for, such as deep red cherries, juicy grapes, or crunchy snow peas. Frequently slip those favorite fruits into your bag lunch and breakfast cereal. Similarly, add the veggies into soups, stews and sauces.

Riding bikes, grass skiing or making snow angels. Walking when the weather is nice is a super easy way to keep fit. When in their twenties, men can walk at ease whenever they get some free time. While this will keep weight gain at bay, it will also help exercise the leg muscles and keep joint pains away. Also, it is advisable to use the stairs instead of the elevator. Park your car some distance away from the place to visit and walk down from the parking lot to the venue.

Research has also proven that mall walking also helps. So, while the shopping spree is still on, try burning more calories by opting out of taking the escalator and walking store to store in the mall itself. All these options add up. If you walk twice a day for 10 minutes and try a few of these tips, you may find yourself with a low-impact, 30-minute workout easily tucked under your belt.

NATURAL ANTI-AGING SOURCE

Before you buy the latest anti-aging skin
cream or conditioning hair product, consider
this: Your diet plays a key role in how you
look.

In other words, if you're not taking care of
yourself on the inside -- drinking enough
water and eating healthy foods -- all the
expensive beauty products and makeup in the
world won't stop you from looking pale and
exhausted on the outside.

Michele Pavia, wellness expert and author of
Lose Your F in Attitude , explains how by
simply including the five following foods in a
well-balanced diet, we can look radiant and
gorgeous from the inside out:

"... Makeup gives an illusion not so much of
beauty but of health. A healthy complexion
with plump lips is healthy. A sallow
complexion with dehydrated and pale lips can
mean anemia or an underlying condition or
disease; or, simply a poor diet. So, you see
that what we eat can actually help us be
more healthy looking; and healthy looking is
the key to beauty."

In other words, you know the old saying,
"You are what you eat"? That most certainly
applies to these five beautifying wonder
foods ...

1. Raisins
Beauty benefits: Radiant, healthy skin;
reduced eye squinting; increased eye sparkle.
Why it makes you look good: Loaded with
potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, and
iron, raisins help with body balance and
boost blood health. They also are packed
with photonutrients, which help fight germs,
bacteria, and viruses -- thus causing your
body to look more vibrant and strong.
Raisins give the body energy and vitality and
help in relieving toxins.
Recommended amount per week: A handful
or more every other day. Keep a box in your
purse for a convenient, naturally sweet
snack.

2. Tomatoes
Beauty benefits: Rejuvenated, younger-
looking skin; shiny hair.
Why it makes you look good : Tomatoes are
packed with antioxidants that flush free
radicals away and help you keep a youthful
appearance. One serving has a huge helping
of vitamin C, which aids in detoxing and
immunity function.

Recommended amount per week: Every other
day. In a sauce, on a pizza, plain ... there is
no wrong way to get this food. It only takes
a few tablespoons to give you optimal
benefit, so have your sauce without guilt! You
can even slather it on your skin to relieve
sunburns, or comb through your hair to add
shine.

3. Peanuts
Beauty benefits: Muscle tone; healthy skin;
strong hair and nails; good posture.
Why it makes you look good: Peanuts are
packed with protein, which gives you strong
and healthy hair and nails; plus, it's a boost
for skin tone and muscle tone. Rich in
calcium, they help bone health, which shows
in how you carry yourself: Strong bones and
standing tall are a beautiful asset. Peanuts
also have fiber; so you'll notice that you
eliminate a bit more and that is great for
skin health.

Recommended amount per week: Every other
day or three times a week (provided you
don't have a peanut allergy).

4. Onions
Beauty benefits: Healthy-looking skin, hair,
eyes, and teeth.
Why it makes you look good: The sulfides and
chromium in onions help to boost the
immune system and heart health, as well as
act as an antibacterial and detox trigger.
Onions also help the person to lose unwanted
water weight gently, thus eliminating bloating
as well.
Recommended amount per week: A few
slivers every other day.

5. Potatoes
Beauty benefits: Reduced wrinkles; strong,
energetic body.
Why it makes you look good: Potatoes have
vitamin C, potassium, manganese, B6,
copper, tryptophan, and fiber -- all of which
are great to calm you down and relieve joint
health. Having healthy nerves and joint
health not only help you feel better, but
you'll walk and talk differently than if you're
in pain or stressed. In fact, eat a potato and
you'll be walking and acting like a carefree
youth.

Recommended amount per week: Potatoes
can be eaten almost daily.
If you happen to fall short of the weekly
recommendations once in a while, don't
sweat it. Just chug a couple extra glasses of
water and you'll be feeling young and
beautiful in no time.

FOODS AND THINGS THAT CAN HURT THE HUMAN LIFE

A frozen marg or two (or three), a gooey
grilled cheese, a gratuitous hookup with your
dumb-as-bricks neighbor who has a Gos-tastic
bod: While you know these things aren't
exactly good for you, they're massively
enjoyable as an occasional indulgence. But
what's really gets our panties in a twist? When
stuff you've been led your whole life to
believe were super healthy turn out to be
fucking with you in one way or another. Check
out the six biggest culprits here.

Vitamins
Just shoot us now, why don't you. Vitamins,
yes vitamins of all things, can destroy your
health: A and E in particular have been linked
in numerous studies to increased mortality
(from cancer, heart failure, etc.). The reason?
Their high levels of antioxidants—which, WTF,
have always been hailed as the holy grail of
health—weakens your immune system .

Yoga
Torn tendons and cartilage. Destroyed hips.
Arthritis. Retinal tears! Back and neck
trauma! Blood clots !! Permanent nerve
injury!!! Brain damage!!! STROKE!!! Turns out
all that downward-dogging might be more of
an extreme sport than a Zen-inducing soul
massage . Thanks to all that exaggerated
bending and contorting, the number of yoga-
related emergency room admissions more
than doubled from 2001 to 2002. We're not
saying stop namaste-ing, but tread carefully...

Neti Pot
Touted by the likes of Oprah, Dr. Oz, and
Molly Sims, this holistic nasal cleanser seems
like a quaint, harmless home remedy to clear
up allergies , colds, and congestion. Until,
that is, it turns around and gives you a
freaking deadly brain infection! Several people
in Louisiana died after flushing out their nose
using tap water containing a fatal amoeba.
(Curse you, Naegleria fowleri!) According to
the FDA, use bottled water or boil H2O and
let it cool before a nasal douche—or, what
the hell, just pass the Claritin.

Brown Rice
Carbs are bad, wheat makes you fat, potatoes
are empty calories, etc. But the one starch we
still have on our side is brown rice, right? …
Right? Not so much. A Consumer Reports
investigation tested hundreds of different
brands of rice and discovered measurable
amounts of arsenic in all of them. Rice eaters
had arsenic levels that were 44 percent
greater than people who don't get their rice
on—and what's more, the " good for you "
brown kind had significantly higher levels of
the toxin than the white variety. So, make
quinoa your new BFF, okay?

Grilled Food
It's BBQ season—which supposedly makes
healthy eating faster and easier than ever. You
can just throw sliced veggies, a chicken
breast, even fruit on the grill, and voila! Uh,
yeah, about that… Hate to break it to you, but
charred food can, surprise surprise, give
you cancer . You know those blackened bits?
They indicate the presence of the carcinogen
HCA, which can damage your DNA and
kickstart the big C. You don't have to ban
barbecue outright, but minimize HCA by
cooking at lower temps, removing the skin
from chicken or salmon, and using smaller
pieces of meat so it'll be done faster.

Spray-on Sunscreen
Don't get us wrong—we worship sunscreen
for its amazing ability to stave off skin
cancer …but not all types are created equal.
Sunscreen sprays are crazy popular (makes
sense: they're convenient and easy to apply,
they coat your skin evenly), but they might
not be the safest bet. The FDA is currently
investigating some potentially dangerous side-
effects of spritzing on your SPF. There's a
concern that not enough of it actually gets on
your skin, and that you'll inhale the chemical-
filled product as you mist it on—and now we
can't even use a neti pot to get that crap out.

HOW TO BE PHYSICALLY FIT

Sort out your diet . It is one of the
most important components of a fit
lifestyle. Many people ignore it, but
if you exercise and eat lots of junk
food you will not get any fitter.
This is because the junk food turns
to fat almost immediately and
exercising only gets rid of that fat,
so you are effectively going
nowhere. First of all, get rid of any
junk food. This includes chocolate,
sweets, crisps and most
importantly fast food. Lots of
people have no idea how bad fast
food is for them. It leads to
significant weight gain and even
depression in just 30 days. So cut
out the junk. You should have a
balanced diet. Eat salads,
vegetables, fruit and lots of
chicken, which are high in protein.
You should try to eat
potatoes,pasta and bananas, since
they offer large amounts of energy
over a long period of time. Try and
make out a table for each week,
adding new healthy food which you
can easily find in most health food
shops. Most of this requires
willpower so have some guts!

Exercise. It is a
very important
part of a healthy
lifestyle.
Exercise keeps
your blood flowing which keeps
your heart beating.This helps stop
clogged arteries and less chance of
a heart attack in later life. It is
important that you exercise right.
Stretch before any exercise to avoid
pulled muscles or injuries. Exercise
you can do at home includes push
ups, bench, sit ups etc. Jogging is
also a major exercise. You should
jog at least a kilometer to keep that
fat off. Pace yourself and try and
design a route through a local area.
The gym is another good place. You
should always learn how to use
weights and exercises in the gym
from an instructor or professional.
Never use a weight that is to heavy.
Use smaller weights and you will
find that you will progress through
the weights very rapidly. Make sure
you keep a record of all the work
you do.

Drink a lot of
water. The
human body is
made of over
80% water, and
you need to
keep
replenishing it.
You should drink at least 1 litre of
water a day.Your body sweats a lot
of that water so you need to put it
back in.

Willpower and motivation . Have
belief in yourself. Do not care what
other people think if you are lifting
small weights compared to big
weights. Why should you care what
they think? So don't. Keep to your
plan and keep your willpower. You
know you can do it.

How to look sexy and slim by swimming

In this article I am going to guide you on how to loose weight by swimming regularly. To lose at least 20 pounds, you have to be swimming regularly everyday. It doesn’t end in regular swimming, you have you must increase your speed and distance so that your body work out.

Swimming is a very fast way of loosing weight, do you know why? “it is because swimming works out every muscle in your body, and it also helps you keep fit”.

However you have to be aware that if you just enter a pool and paddle for 20mins or even more and come out without swimming you can never loose weight.  You have to swim far so that you can loose a good amount of calories.

               BASIC ESSENTIALS OF SWIMMING

Swimming in a pool has more advantage to when you swim in a lake or river. When you swim in a pool, you can time the lap or distance you have covered. But when you swim in a lake or river you can hardly do that. And sometimes there are dangerous objects in a river.

I discovered that some people find them selves extremely hungry after they finish swimming. That  is a good sign that your body system is working out. So my advice to such people is that they should eat less anytime they are hungry after swimming, they could eat smaller quantity of what they used to eat before. When they do that their body metabolism would increase rapidly.

How long it would take for you to loose weight depends on how hard you work in the swimming pool. If you are the kind of swimmer that swims steady for hours and covers a long distance, be sure to loose weight rapidly. Then if you are the type that does not swim for a long time and does not cover much distance you would be loosing weight gradually.
So my friends, working hard in the swimming pool is a fast way to loose weight by swimming. Swim always, even when you are tired continues swimming.

Lose fat in 7days FAT LOSS FACTORS

In this short weight loss presentation I will teach you a somewhat unusual weight loss strategy that can help you get a flatter belly in under 7 days, while still enjoying the foods you love. This is the first tip that I always teach my patients here in Fishers, IN. And is the same tip that helped one of my patients whom I'm most proud of, (Lori) lose 2 inches from her belly, lose 8 lbs in only 9 days, lose 2 inches from each thigh, lose ¾ of an inch from each arm, and drop 3 dress sizes (At the age of 30, she now wears a smaller dress than she did in high school!).

Lori ultimately lost 90 pounds and I'll share with you 1 tip that helped her get there. I can't leave this video up for long, so be sure to watch it from beginning to end while it's still here. Please note: If you leave the page and come back, the video will automatically restart at the beginning.
